The band formed in late 1978–early 1979 in Notting Hill, London, England.. In October 1979, shortly after they began the Malicious Damage record label, Killing Joke released their debut EP, Turn to Red.

Batman: The Killing Joke is a "prestige edition" one-shot written by Alan Moore and drawn by Brian Bolland, published by DC Comics in 1988. It has in its original form continuously been held in print since then. It has also been reprinted as part of the DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore-trade paperback.. In 2008 it was reprinted in a deluxe hardcover edition.
