  5. Kenyon College, the oldest private college in Ohio, was founded in 1824 by Philander Chase, the first Episcopal bishop of Ohio. The poet and literary critic John Crowe Ransom taught at Kenyon from 1937 to 1958 and founded the influential literary journal The Kenyon Review in 1939.
