Karl Bodmer, Johann Carl Bodmer o Jean-Charles Bodmer (Zúrich, Suiza, 6 de febrero de 1809-Barbizon, Francia, 30 de octubre de 1893) fue un artista gráfico, litógrafo, dibujante, ilustrador y pintor suizo. De 1832 a 1834, acompañó al príncipe Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied a América del Norte.

Known as Karl Bodmer in literature and paintings, his name was recorded as Johann Karl Bodmer and Jean-Charles Bodmer, respectively.

Exhibition Overview. Swiss-born Karl Bodmer (1809–1893) was one of the first and most accomplished European artists to document the landscape of the North American interior and its Indigenous peoples.
Karl Bodmer was a Swiss-French printmaker, etcher, lithographer, draughtsman, painter, illustrator and hunter who painted many oil paintings of the American West of the 19th century. He accompanied the German explorer Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied on his Missouri River expedition and recorded images of cities, rivers, towns and peoples. He also created watercolours, drawings and wood engravings of the American West.
Bodmer was one of the most accomplished and prolific European artists to travel the Missouri River, and one of the first to document both the landscapes of the American interior and its Indigenous peoples. The exhibition—on view at The Met from April 5 through July 25, 2021—is the first to focus primarily on Bodmer’s portraiture.
