Karagandá, también escrito Karagandy ( kazajo: Қарағанды, ruso: Караганда), es la capital de la provincia homónima, en el centro de Kazajistán. Cuenta con una población de 446 200 habitantes (censo de 2006), que la sitúa como la cuarta ciudad más poblada del país, por detrás de Almatý, Astaná y Shymkent. 1 .
Karaganda is approximately 230 km (140 mi) south-east of Kazakhstan's capital Astana. The city has been a major center for coal mining throughout much of its modern history, and experienced major growth during the Soviet Union as its coal industry developed. Coal mining remains a significant part of the city's economy.
