Early years. Piven was born in Manhattan and raised in a Reconstructionist Jewish family of Ukrainian Jewish descent.. His parents are Byrne Piven (1929–2002) and Joyce Hiller Piven (née Goldstein), both of whom were actors and drama teachers. His elder sister is director Shira Piven, whom he has described as one of his first acting teachers; his brother-in-law is director Adam McKay.
Joyce Hiller Piven is an American director, teacher, and actress. She and her late husband, Byrne Piven, were actors in the Compass Players. Later, they founded the Piven Theatre Workshop in Evanston, Illinois and became teachers to a generation of stars such as John Cusack, Joan Cusack, Aidan Quinn, Adam McKay, as well as their son Jeremy Piven and daughter Shira Piven.

Byrne & Joyce’s Chicago history began in the 1950’s when the Pivens were founding members of Playwright’s Theatre Club which, under the direction of Paul Sills and David Shepard, featured such players as Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Ed Asner and Barbara Harris. This is the company that spawned Compass Players and Second City.
