In general, women fleeing abusive relationships don't fare well when it comes to hand-to-hand combat or weapons for self defense from their abuser - I can't imagine why pepper spray, bear spray, brass or carbon fiber knuckles etc. would be more helpful/used more effectively than a gun (most women who buy guns for self defense end up getting shot with them, FWIW).
