John Edward Thaw, CBE (3 January 1942 – 21 February 2002) was an English actor in television, stage and cinema, best known for his starring role in the television series Inspector Morse as Detective Chief Inspector Endeavour Morse and The Sweeney as Detective Inspector Jack Regan.
John Thaw (1942-2002) was a British actor who starred in The Sweeney, Inspector Morse, Chaplin and other roles. He won three BAFTA Awards and was married to Sheila Hancock.

John Thaw CBE (3 January 1942 - 21 February 2002) was a British actor. Thaw was born in Longsight, and grew up in Gorton and Burnage, all areas of south Manchester. He is best known for his starring roles in The Sweeney, Inspector Morse and Kavanagh QC.
