  5. John Swinton. John Swinton was born in Saltoun, Scotland, on 12th December, 1830. His family emigrated to Canada in 1843. Later they moved to Illinois. After leaving school he worked as a printer before finding employment on a steamboat on the Mississippi. Swinton developed an abhorrence for slavery while living in Charleston, South Carolina.
