The Army investigation found he was plagued by self-doubt, sleep deprivation and a belief that he was intellectually incapable of mastering the job. The report also reviewed mental health issues in the general officer corps and high-profile misconduct cases.

He was the commanding general of the U.S. Army Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was expected to lead U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command.

John Rossi, who was just days away from taking command of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, died by suicide on July 31 in his on-post home at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. He was a respected leader, valiant warrior and trusted friend who gave more than 33 years of service to the nation, the Army said.
John Rossi, Ph.D., the Lidow Family Research Chair and professor and chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, is widely regarded as a world leader in the development of RNA interference and in clinical research involving nucleic acids for the treatment of various diseases.
