John Leroy Hennessy (born September 22, 1952) is an American computer scientist who is chairperson of Alphabet Inc. (Google). Hennessy is one of the founders of MIPS Technologies and Atheros, and also the tenth President of Stanford University. Hennessy announced that he would step down in the summer of 2016.

John Hennessy is a pioneer in computer architecture and a cofounder of MIPS Technologies. He served as Stanford's president from 2000 to 2016 and is the director of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program.
John L. Hennessy joined Stanford’s faculty in 1977 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering. He rose through the academic ranks to full professorship in 1986 and was the inaugural Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from 1987 to 2004.
