John Giorno además fue budista y creó en 1984 la fundación AIDS Treatment Project en apoyo a los enfermos de VIH. En 2010 tuvo su primera exposición individual con una serie de pinturas de poemas, llamada Black Paintings and Drawings, y radicó en Nueva York hasta el día de su muerte el 11 de octubre.Tenía 82 años.
