John Chowning is a composer, computer music pioneer and emeritus faculty at Stanford University. He discovered the FM synthesis algorithm in 1967 and founded the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) in 1974, where he also taught and conducted research on computer music and related topics.
