Joseph Campbell Butler (born September 16, 1941) is an American drummer, singer and actor. He is a member of the Lovin' Spoonful, who had seven top 10 hits between 1965 and 1966. [1] Butler would replace the bands original drummer Jan Carl and would occasionally sing lead vocals.
The two recruited Steve Boone (bass) and Joe Butler (drums, vocals), both of whom were former members of one of the Village's first rock groups, the Sellouts. The Lovin' Spoonful's four-piece lineup honed their sound at local nightclubs before they began recording for Kama Sutra Records with the producer Erik Jacobsen.

The band, led by John Sebastian, Steve Boone, Joe Butler and Zal Yanovsky, exploded onto the charts sending their first 7 singles soaring onto Billboard’s tip-10 charts virtually overnight. The Spoonful formed in New York’s Greenwich Village in 1965 at the Night Owl Café and signed to Kama Sutra Records.
