Li trouwde in 1987 met zijn vroegere Beijing Wushu teamgenote en actrice Huang Qiuyan, met wie hij twee kinderen kreeg. In 1990 scheidden ze. In 1999 trouwde hij met Nina Li Zhi, eveneens actrice, uit Hongkong. Ook met haar heeft hij twee kinderen. Li was op vakantie op de Maldiven tijdens de tsunami van 26 december 2004.
