He was born in the early 50s in Missouri or Texas and was first arrested for counterfeit money. He formed his own gang, The Boys, and robbed and rustled cattle. He met Billy in 1877 and became his friend, but their relationship turned sour in 1878 when they clashed over the war. He was arrested for the murder of John Tunstall and sent to prison, where he broke out and vanished.
