A classically trained performer, Hammer first emerged in the 1970s, appearing with Mahavishnu before issuing his own synth-based albums like 1975's The First Seven Days and 1979's rock-oriented Black Sheep. He has also collaborated with a bevy of name performers including Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Neal Schon, and many more.

Jan Hammer (* 17. April 1948 in Prag als Jan Hamr) ist ein tschechisch-amerikanischer Jazz -Pianist und - Keyboarder. Als Filmmusiker erreichte er vor allem mit seinen Kompositionen zur Fernsehserie Miami Vice große Bekanntheit.
Jan Hammer has no problem with dance music, but is disappointed at the lack of opportunity radio and TV provides for other styles of synth playing. "I have also produced dance music and I enjoy listening to some of it where there are stark sounds and imaginative programming, but with most of it there's a musician presence that's missing — where the musician has something to say," says Jan.
