James Archie Turrell (Pasadena (Los Ángeles), 6 de mayo de 1943) es un artista estadounidense que trabaja principalmente con la luz y el espacio enclavado dentro del Land Art.
James Turrell nació en Pasadena (1943), California, un lugar indudablemente lleno de luz y su trabajo como cartógrafo, a los dieciséis años, posiblemente fuera el origen de su atracción por el espacio. Más tarde, estudiaría percepción psicológica en Pompona College, en 1965, además de matemáticas, geología y astronomía.
James Turrell (born May 6, 1943) is an American artist known for his work within the Light and Space movement. He is considered the "master of light" often creating art installations that mix natural light with artificial color through openings in ceilings thereby transforming internal spaces by ever shifting and changing color.
James Turrell has dedicated his practice to what he has deemed perceptual art, investigating the materiality of light. Influenced by the notion of pure feeling in pictorial art, Turrell’s earliest work focused on the dialectic between constructing light and painting with light, building on the sensorial experience of space, color, and perception.

His installation Aten Reign (2013) reimagines the rotunda of Frank Lloyd Wright's museum as a luminous Skyspace, using shifting natural and artificial light and intense color. The exhibition also features his early works, such as Afrum I (White) (1967), a glowing cube that reveals the materiality of light.
