James Tenney (né le à Silver City au Nouveau-Mexique – mort le 24 août 2006 à Valencia en Californie) est un compositeur et un théoricien de la musique américain, spécialiste de la musique de Conlon Nancarrow. Il a enseigné dans plusieurs universités, dont l' université de Californie .
Scordatura Ensemble. Asked whether he would describe his music as "Sound for the sake of sound," James Tenney (1934-2006) replied, "It's sound for the sake of perceptual insight－some kind of perceptual revelation." This release aptly demonstrates Tenney's deep exploratory fascination with the nature and potentialities of aural perception.
22 de feb. de 2021 · In 1971, American composer James Tenney wrote the solo violin piece Koan as part of his Postal Pieces.The score is contained entirely on a postcard consisting of only seven measures. A string quartet arrangement of Koan, written by Tenney in 1984, retains the original violin line but adds a further harmonic context in the remaining three instruments.
