Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale, a Faustian story of a soldier’s devastating pact with the Devil, is given an inventive refresh by former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters. With great imagination and skill, he acts out all three parts—Narrator, Soldier, and Devil—in a voice that’s at once brilliantly comic, ominously calm, and viciously caustic.

In 1917, while the First World War continued, Igor Stravinsky composed the music for L’Histoire du soldat (The Soldier’s Tale) with the text being written by Charles Ferdinand Ramuz. It was translated into English by Michael Flanders and Kitty Black, and tells the tale of a Russian soldier, on leave, meeting and eventually making a deal with The Devil.

The 2018 album Igor Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale is the adaptation by Roger Waters (co-founder of Pink Floyd) on the 1918 same-titled theatrical work. Waters recorded this version with members of the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival at Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church.

His writing would always bear the imprint of this trauma, in particular on The Wall (1979), The Final Cut (1983) – dedicated to his father – and Amused to Death (1992).This story of a poor soldier who sold his soul to the devil must have struck a chord with him.
