Inspired by art rock and avant-garde pop, Davies was the main creative force behind the band, being a classically trained musician.Band member Keith Welsh joined him on bass.

De band speelt onder andere new wave en synthpop en heeft in zowel de Verenigde Staten als Europa meerdere top 10-hits gescoord. Hun grootste hit in Europa was Crazy uit 1987.. In augustus 2006 werd de band opgenomen in de ARIA Hall of Fame. In Australië had de band 28 keer een platina album.
