The harrowing true account of Steven Stayner, who was kidnapped by pedophile Kenneth Parnell and his lackey in 1973. In 1980, when Steven was 14, Parnell kidnapped another young boy and Steven found a way for the two of them to escape and go back to their families.
7-year old Steven Stayner is kidnapped a few days before Christmas by Kenneth Parnell. Under the belief that Parnell has been given legal custody of him, and that his family has moved away, he stays with Parnell for seven years, enduring repetitive sexual abuse the entire time. Finally, at fourteen, he returns home to his family.

At only 7 years old, he was snatched away from his home in 1972 by Kenneth Parnell and Irving Murphy. Steven was held against his will and sexually assaulted for seven years.
He's forced to adjust to a family he'd never really known, to convince himself that his parents had never forgotten him, and to put his seven-year hell behind him. While I Know My First Name Is Steven ends on an upbeat note, the real Stayner died in a motorcycle accident only a few months after this film was first telecast in May 1989.
