Penn met fellow singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, and during the recording of her album I'm with Stupid (to which Penn contributed), the two struck up a friendship, which blossomed into romance and their subsequent marriage on December 29, 1997.
Mann released her first solo album, Whatever, in 1993, followed by I'm with Stupid in 1995. Both earned positive reviews but low sales, and placed Mann in conflict with her record company, Geffen . She achieved wider recognition for her contributions to the soundtrack for the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia (1999).
It should be noted when Michael Penn first met Aimee Mann, it was for the 1995 recording of her album, I’m with Stupid. As the two worked together they formed a friendship that later grew into a romantic relationship. On December 29, 1997, the two wed and have since formed an independent music collective known as United Musicians.

Michael Penn – guitar (13) John Sands – drums (1,2,5,13), guitar (2) ... I’m With Stupid is another well crafted album from Aimee. This one abandons the 60s experimentation for a more straightforward 90s rock sound. I think this direction is probably for the best and it makes sense for the time.
