Portnoy began his professional musical career as part of Muddy Waters' backing band in the early '70s. Jerry replaced Mojo Buford in 1974 and he stayed with the band for six years. During his tenure with Waters, he appeared on the albums I'm Ready, Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live, and King Bee.
Jerry played harp on three Grammy Award Winning albums: I'm Ready by Muddy Waters, Muddy Waters Live by Muddy Waters and From the Cradle by Eric Clapton. Jerry's 3 CD Masterclass has been the definitive learning tool for blues harmonica for the last 20 years and he has lectured at the Berklee School of Music.
