Thin, elongated hummingbird bills are well adapted to exploit nectar sources. Hummingbird pollinated flowers are usually brightly colored, scentless and have long, tubular corollas. The shape of a hummingbird’s bill determines the species of flower it can feed on. In fact, co-evolution of flower shape and bill shape is a well-studied phenomenon.

While some hummingbirds have downward-curved bills, the curve is smooth, and the bill itself doesn't change length in mature birds.
