Gaitskell determined to modernize the party to accommodate the aspirations of middle‐class voters. To traditionalists, however, this meant diluting the socialist content of the party's ideology. Such opposition led to Gaitskell's defeat in 1960 over his attempt to remove clause 4 (the common ownership of the means of production) from the party's constitution.

Hugh Todd Naylor Gaitskell, född 9 april 1906 i London, död 18 januari 1963 i London, var en brittisk politiker som var partiledare för Labour 1955–1963. Gaitskell läste vid Winchester College och universitetet i Oxford. Han blev intresserad av politik tack vare generalstrejken i Storbritannien 1926.
