His first meeting with Howlin’ Wolf – With the exception of a 6 month hiatus, Sumlin was Howlin’ Wolf’s guitarist for a total of 23 years. He joined Wolf’s band in 1954 and played with them until Wolf’s death in 1976.

He was ranked number 43 in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and influenced many guitarists.
