Helmut Newton föddes i Berlin som Helmut Neustädter 1920. Eftersom han var av judisk börd flydde han 1938 från nazisterna med två kameror i bagaget, och hamnade via Singapore i Australien där han fick medborgarskap och bytte namn till Newton. 1956 inleddes en karriär inom modefotograferingen som saknar motstycke, då han fick ett ettårskontrakt med den brittiska editionen av Vogue.

23 de ene. de 2004 · Helmut Newton was born Helmut Neustädter in Berlin on October 31, 1920 to Max Neustädter, a wealthy button manufacturer, and mother Klara (nee Marquis). Klara was a widow with a son, Hans, when she married Max, a soldier from Silesia who took over the running of the button factory left behind by her late husband.
The Helmut Newton Foundation celebrates its 20th anniversary in June 2024 with the group show Berlin, Berlin – and simultaneously pays tribute to the city where Newton was born. In the fall of 2003, Helmut Newton established his foundation in Berlin to house parts of his archive, which opened to the public in June 2004 at the historic Landwehrkasino next to Zoologischer Garten station.
