Helena (c. 255–329)Roman empress and mother of Constantine the Great who made a famous pilgrimage through the Holy Land in search of relics and the sites associated with the life of Jesus, thereby helping to set a trend in religious piety which would help to define the Middle Ages. By the Byzantine period, Helena was believed to have founded more than thirty churches in the “holy land.” 127 Still, it is notable, especially in our early pilgrim testimonies, that she was not immediately remembered as the most important driver of the Constantinian building program in Palestine, just as she also had not been in Rome.
A pilgrim to the Holy Land had to prepare carefully for the journey. Pilgrims first had to confess their sins to a priest, and the priest had to approve the pilgrimage. Without this approval, the pilgrim could not gain any spiritual benefit from the journey. A pilgrim also had to take a public vow before the priest.

Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine I (r. 306-337 CE), was one of the great founders of churches, notably in Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and it was during her visit to the Holy Land in 326 CE that she claimed to have discovered the True Cross, that is the actual wooden cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified.

Chronicling his travels in 333–334, the pilgrim began in Burdigala—modern-day Bordeaux in France, hence the name the Bordeaux Pilgrim—and passed through northern Italy, the Danube Valley, Constantinople, Asia Minor and Syria on his way to Byzantine Jerusalem.
