Hans Hofmann. Nacido en Weissenberg, Alemania, creció en Munich, donde estudió arquitectura antes de dedicarse a la pintura. Entre 1904 y 1914 vivió en París, experimentando con la pintura abstracta. En 1915 regresa a Munich, creando una academia de pintura que dirigió hasta 1931, fecha en la que se traslada a los Estados Unidos.
El 17 de febrero de 1966, Hofmann murió de un ataque al corazón a la edad de 85 años en la ciudad de Nueva York. Después de su muerte, se hicieron importantes exposiciones dedicadas al padre del expresionismo abstracto, incluyendo una en el Museo Hirschhorn en Washington en 1976 organizada por Renate.
