Much of the imagery associated with vampires in general and with Dracula in particular emerged out of staged vampire plays.

As of October 1927, Dracula premiered on Broadway, but with a different script. At the behest of producer Horace Liveright, John L. Balderston took Deane’s play and Americanized it (Rhodes and Kaffenberger 2021 , 203).

Derby’s Grand Theatre, which once stood in Babington Lane, was the site of the world premiere of Hamilton Deane’s adaptation of Dracula, on 15 May 1924.
