4 de ene. de 2007 · Abstract. A re-examination of Bessie Smith's first two released blues recordings – ‘Down Hearted Blues’ and ‘Gulf Coast Blues’ – demonstrates that her interpretative originality and expressive individuality were evident from the start of her recording career in 1923.
Bessie Smith (April 15, 1894 – September 26, 1937) was an African-American blues singer widely renowned during the Jazz Age. Nicknamed the "Empress of the Blues", she was the most popular female blues singer of the 1930s.
