Patricia Jean Griffin (born March 16, 1964) is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. She is a vocalist and plays guitar and piano. She is known for her stripped-down songwriting style in the folk music genre. Her songs have been covered by numerous musicians, including Emmylou Harris, Ellis Paul, Kelly Clarkson, Rory Block, Dave Hause, Sugarland, Bette Midler and The Chicks.
“River” was Patty Griffin’s first recording after her battle with the breast cancer diagnosis she received in 2016. Released in 2019, along with her self-titled album, became one of the best vocal performances of her career. It played an instrumental role in its winning Best Traditional Gospel Album in 2011 at the Grammy Awards.
The album was released on March 8, 2019, and follows a four-year hiatus that Griffin took while battling breast cancer following her 2015 album Servant of Love, including briefly losing her voice. Patty Griffin won the Best Folk Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards and was nominated for the Libera Awards Best Folk/Bluegrass Album.
