GETTING GRACE is very funny, winsome and poignant, but it doesn’t get the Grace of God. For example, the local Episcopal priest prays for Grace to experience the horror of reincarnation. A clumsy comedy that actually gets better as it turns serious, “Getting Grace” — a low-budget movie opening in 60 markets this week — is an earnest, big-hearted story of hope and perseverance in the face of illness and death. Grace, played by winsome newcomer Madelyn Dundon, is a 17-year-old girl with a diagnosis of terminal cancer.
Grace deals with us completely apart from the principle of deserving. By its very nature, grace doesn't look for a reason in the person who receives. And so, we understand this, that grace is unmerited, it's undeserving. And therefore, we have to stop trying to give God a reason to give us His grace.
