Flipping through this particular edition, I was immediately transported to Paris in the early 20th century with Stein's quirky, delightfully inaccessible, and downright dense writing crashing into me like a wave.

Close by is her sister-in-law, Sarah Samuels Stein, painted by Henri Matisse, of whom she was a patron.
