In December 1980 I stood alongside George Galloway in Caird Square as the flag of Palestine was hoisted above Dundee City Chambers to mark the twinning of Dundee with Nablus in the West Bank. I was 22 years old. George had led the campaign for the twinning, against much opposition.

The by-election in Rochdale was called following the death of the incumbent Labour MP, Sir Tony Lloyd, in January.
