George Francis FitzGerald (3 de agosto de 1851 – 21 de febrero de 1901) fue un físico irlandés y profesor en el Trinity College de Dublín, a finales del siglo XIX. George Francis FitzGerald was a physicist who first suggested a method of producing radio waves, thus helping to lay the basis of wireless telegraphy. He also developed a theory, now known as the Lorentz–-FitzGerald contraction, which Einstein used in his own special theory of relativity.
FitzGerald is known for his work in electromagnetic theory and for the Lorentz–FitzGerald contraction, which became an integral part of Albert Einstein 's special theory of relativity. A crater on the far side of the Moon is named after him, as is a building at TCD.
George FitzGerald was a brilliant mathematical physicist who today is known by most scientists as one of the proposers of the FitzGerald-Lorentz contraction in the theory of relativity.
