It is 1968 and they are very busy, engaged in the depressing ritual of ushering the bodies that have returned from the Vietnam War into Arlington National Cemetery.
Every filmmaker from Coppola’s generation got to make their own John Ford movie, but on their terms. As others have pointed out, Gardens of Stone is modeled after The Long Gray Line; only Ford’s movie is set in a top military academy and Coppola’s in an army cemetery for falling soldiers and you can pretty much guess the ways those settings inform them in rather different directions.
