Proto punk is punkish music before Johnny Thunders or Ramones. When I was younger hardly any bands at all were called proto punk besides MC5, New York Dolls and Iggy and the Stooges. Now it seems like music writers are determined to claim more and more bands are proto-punk or the “first” punk band.
