“Math Rock” along with Post Rock is included as a subgenre category on Prog Archives, so it could be considered prog rock depending on one’s own definition - totally subjective. And Rush were precursors of it, along with King Crimson as others have mentioned. Bands that followed are Slint, Polvo, and Battles to name a few.
