I'll readily admit that The Dells are an acquired taste. They've always seemed to straddle the line between old fashion pre-soul moves and a more contemporary soul sound. That interest in appealing to both marketing demographics makes many of their album painful to navigate, which is certainly the case for 1971's "Freedom Means".
