Performing with local bands, he was signed by Conway Twitty in the late 50s. Carter played on numerous Nashville sessions during the 60s, putting his ability to improvise to good effect.

  2. Fred Carter Jr. began his career in northeastern Louisiana playing rock & roll. He backed Dale Hawkins, known for his rock hit “Susie-Q,” and later played with Ronnie Hawkins, Dale’s cousin, in his backing group, the Hawks.
