In coastal oceanography, the terms ebb and flood refer to tidal currents. These terms are particularly relevant for tidal inlet systems: estuaries, tidal rivers and lagoons. The ebb current corresponds to seaward flow and the flood current to landward flow.
High tide flooding describes coastal flooding conditions due to rising sea levels, sinking land, and the loss of natural barriers. Sea level rises over several hours, covering the intertidal zone; flood tide. The water stops rising, reaching a local maximum called high tide.
