Unlike much of Beck's work, Flash is regarded as a pop outing, and was dubbed a pop rock album by critic Glenn Astarita. According to writer Tom Harrison, the combination of Rodgers, Jimmy Hall and other outsider contributors lends Flash a "high-priced funk-rock foundation."
In May 1982, Hall peaked at No. 77 with the song "Fool for Your Love." From 1982 to 1984, he was, one of two frontmen of the group Betts, Hall, Leavell and Trucks. In 1985, he sang lead vocals on Jeff Beck's album Flash and was nominated for a Grammy Award for the performance.

A big part of the Jimmy Hall narrative has been his extensive friendship and musical collaboration with Jeff Beck. Beck’s Flash album, recorded in 1985, featured Jimmy Hall on vocals for Ambitious, Stop Look and Listen, and Gets Us All in the End. This album garnered a 1986 GRAMMY nomination.
