Madelaine Edith Prior MBE (born 14 August 1947) is an English folk rock singer, best known as the lead vocalist of Steeleye Span. She was born in Blackpool and moved to St Albans in her teens. Her father, Allan Prior, was co-creator of the police drama Z-Cars.She was married to Steeleye bass guitarist Rick Kemp, and their daughter, Rose Kemp, is also a singer.

3 de jun. de 2023 · Maddy Prior was born in Blackpool, but fresh from St. Albans when she took to the folk circuit with a banjo and Tim Hart. She was the smooth-voiced lady who, with her tales of murderers who topped people as they slept, yarns about drunken soldiers whose legs got hacked off, stories of impossible love over social barriers, and her dances to reeling fiddles, helped ease my teenage angst.
The instantly recognisable voice of Steeleye Span, Maddy Prior began singing in her early teens and hasn’t stopped since. Forming a duo with Tim Hart in the mid-sixties, the pair were part of the debut line up of Steeleye and remained with the band until the early eighties, when Hart was forced into semi-retirement.
27 de nov. de 2023 · They made two albums for a small independent label at that time, Folk Songs of Old England Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, and established a considerable reputation around Britain’s folk clubs, before they met Ashley Hutchings, the first bass player of Fairport Convention and one of that group’s early leading lights, who suggested the formation of Steeleye Span in 1970.
