His unmistakable tone on the trumpet, flugelhorn and cornet, and the intelligence and exuberance in his improvisation. His innovative, idiosyncratic writing.
This album (also rereleased recently as "Deep in a Dream") is I think one of Helen's best albums from the '60's, and her first collaboration with pianist Dick Katz. Others include Jim Hall (guitar), Ron Carter (bass), Thad Jones (cornet), Pete LaRoca & Arnie Wise (drums).

4 de jun. de 2006 · Thad Jones, as well as Clark Terry, is a master of cornet/flugelhorn – he has a distinctive sound of nobody else can do. Jim Hall does unique chord progressions and fascinating sound presentation like he always do. Pete LaRoca backs Merrill with very delicate, percussive (and sometimes even poly-rhythmic) approach.
