The Velvettes were widely recognized in the 1960s in UK, and worked closely with The Cyril Davies All Stars. Hazel Futa was a Duncan Village born and bread beauty queen, singer, actress and the first black Miss Africa South in 1955.
The Velvettes performed at the Eel Pie Island Hotel Club. Photographed by Mike Peters. They were booked to play on Sundays, billed alongside Long John Baldry. (not to be confused with the Motown Velvelettes). The line up included Hazel Futa, Patience “Princess” Gowabe, and Eunice Mamsie Mthombeni – and they were from South Africa.
