Había estado luchando contra la mielitis autoinmune desde que le diagnosticaron un trastorno neurológico hace dos años.
Etsuko Ichihara was initially cast in Tokyo Family, the 2011 remake of Tokyo Story, but ended up not playing the role of the Hirayama matriarch after shooting was delayed due to the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
