On January 13, 1973, Eric Clapton was lured out of semi-retirement for a pair of shows at London’s Rainbow Theatre. Pete Townshend was the one who organized the concerts for Clapton.

Townshend made several solo appearances during the 1970s, two of which were captured on record: Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert in January 1973 (which Townshend organized to revive Clapton's career after the latter's heroin addiction), and the Paul McCartney-sponsored Concerts for the People of Kampuchea in December 1979.

The concert was organised by Pete Townshend and marked Eric Clapton's comeback after the 1971 "Concert for Bangladesh". In the year after the Rainbow Concert, Clapton recovered from his heroin addiction and recorded "461 Ocean Boulevard". This concert is the first live performance where Clapton used his famous Stratocaster guitar "Blackie".
