He also appeared in 41 films and TV shows, such as Woman of Dolwyn, I, Claudius and King Ralph. He was a member of the British Empire and a friend of Richard Burton.

In the 1930s and ’40s he wrote some immensely successful plays, which contained starring parts for himself. The best-known of these.
