Emanuel “Chris” Welch has served as a State Representative from the 7th District of Illinois since 2013. On January 13, 2021, Chris became the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives. Welch served as Chair of the House Executive Committee and before that he Chaired Higher Education.
Welch is a graduate of Proviso West High School (‘89), Northwestern University (‘93), and The John Marshall Law School (‘97). He is a 2016 inductee into the JMLS Wall of Fame. In 2022, Welch lead the House Democratic Caucus to its largest Super Majority in modern history. Welch is married to ShawnTe and has two children, Tyler and Marley.
